Tenants Insurance

Do tenants need Insurance?

Lots of tenants assume that because their landlord will have insured the property they will somehow be covered. This is not the case. Whilst your landlord's insurance will cover the building and the fixtures and fittings it will not cover anything else.

This means that if you're renting an unfurnished property as everything in it belongs to you, you are the one responsible for insuring it. If you are in this position taking out adequate tenants content insurance is a must.

So don't just think that as it's not your house or flat you don't need insurance. If you have any personal possessions of value it is critical that you take out insurance for them. Otherwise in the event that they are stolen, destroyed or damaged in anyway there will be little you can do.

You can also benefit from taking out renters insurance if you are living in a furnished property. This will cover you if you somehow damage the landlord's furniture and save you from losing your deposit and potentially much more if you happen to have an unscrupulous landlord.
